The design's central figure is 'Portrait of a Woman,' by Ethel Walker (1936). The image has been reversed to create a positive image of a woman seeking a hopeful future. Lavender shades highlight other items in the B&HM's collections connected to lesbian lives, but the colour is also tied to the slur 'lavender menace.' The black background refers to the Black Triangle symbol that ‘deviant women,’ including lesbians, would have worn in Nazi concentration camps.
The exhibition is part of PhD researcher Lisa Hinkins' collaborative project, which examines B&HM's collections for representations of historical and contemporary lesbian lives. The displays were created with a group of volunteer participants from the local community and feature items from the collections alongside newly commissioned pieces.
